1. General information
The aim of the subject is to introduce the study of the image and facilitate the understanding of its current relevance from an interdisciplinary perspective, showing the performative mechanisms of the image that constitute the fundamental basis for philosophy, art history, fine arts, communication, etc., as well as from a specific philosophical perspective
These tools will allow students to understand and critically reflect on communication and the construction of images in our current society
It is the first subject of the Aesthetics and Theory of the Arts area of the Degree and it introduces basic questions about the image that will be fundamental in later subjects.

2. Learning results
In order to pass the course, the student must demonstrate the following results:
Manages and is familiar with different ways of thinking in images.
Knows the theoretical foundation of these forms of argumentation and is able to understand it from the history of thought, on the one hand, and from current approaches of the philosophy of the image, on the other
Is able to understand the continuity of the theory of the image in different fields of thought: in general, in the field of art, but also in different disciplines such as communication theory, philosophy, art history, fine arts or design.
Is capable of interpreting, reflecting and making critical judgments about the society in images in which they lives.
Is able, on the basis of the knowledge acquired, to present in written and argued form their own ideas on a central theme in the philosophy of the image.
3. Syllabus
Module 1) Images and violence. Ethics and aesthetics of media and art. With texts by Georges Didi-Huberman, Griselda Pollock, Susan Sontag, Jacques Rancière, Ileana Diéguez, Ana Longoni, Rabih Mroué, among others.
Module 2) Looks. The fabrication of the Other. Decentering of the modern colonial gaze. With texts by Franz Fanon, Coco Fusco, Deborah Poole, Santiago Alba Rico, Joaquín Barriendis, Roger Bartra, Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, among others.
Module 3) Visuals. Questioning heteropatriarchal visuality. With texts by Laura Mulvey, Patricia Mayayo, Linda Nead, Laura Milano, Maite Garbayo, Núria Güell, among others.
4. Academic activities
The course is taught through lectures, sessions dedicated to individual and collective analysis of images and debates. Texts to read, summarize and discuss, images to comment on will be proposed.
The learning activities include: face-to-face lectures in which the teacher explains the syllabus; discussion sessions on the selected texts; seminars in which each student exposes, shares and discusses their own work monographic works in which personal research in the field of current aesthetics is developed; attendance to conferences, courses, film screenings, visits to art and research centres and other activities of artistic-cultural interest

FIRST CALL
CONTINUOUS EVALUACION
a) Written test
Essays articulating the contents covered in the modules (80%)
Assessment criteria:
-Contents. Knowledge and handling of the concepts and problems of each module. The central idea is of philosophical interest. Mastery of the bibliography.
-Structure. Justified organization of the contents, with unity and progression. Mastery of the concepts of the subject, use of clear and synthetic arguments.
-Writing, spelling and syntax.
b) Moderation of discussion sessions
Attendance and participation in debates. Moderation of one of the sessions (20%)
Assessment criteria:
-Materials have been read/viewed and understood.
-Accurate expression, subject-specific language.
-Attentive listening and reflective response.
c) Monographic work.
Free theme to be chosen within the framework of ideas and problems posed (0.5%)
Assessment criteria:
-Relevance of the chosen topic, the central idea is of philosophical interest.
-Justified organization of the contents, with unity and progression.
-Well-founded personal approach.
-Bibliographic and material search.
GLOBAL ASSESSMENT
Written test . 2 of 3 questions (100%) are chosen.
Assessment criteria:
-Reading and understanding of subject materials is demonstrated.
-Accurate and clear expression, subject-specific language.

OVERALL ASSESSMENT Identical to the previous one.
